Willie Lott'a House, By John Constable 2nd half of the 18th century - 19th century 1800-1900

How does Constable’s painting represent an ideal of an English landscape at a time of rapid industrialization?

Most of Constable’s paintings depict the area surrounding his birthplace at East Bergholt in Suffolk. His father owned the mill in the neighbouring village of Flatford, and Constable went there frequently. Willy Lott’s cottage behind the mill was a favourite motif from 1811-12 onwards, and Constable included it in several of his paintings, notably The Hay Wain. This tranquil view of the house and mill stream has been dated about 1816-18. Gallery 67: Nineteenth Century Art
