Procession, David Bomberg, c1914, England Gallery 62: Modern Art Violent anti-Semitism in Russia and deteriorating economic conditions in Eastern Europe resulted in mass immigration of Jewish communities. Between 1881 and 1914 over two million Jewish people left Russia, Poland and the Hapsburg Empire, including around 150,000 Jewish immigrants who came to Britain. In his early work, Bomberg frequently drew upon the Jewish world of his upbringing, employing modernist art forms to express his intense interest in form and colour.
