Wedding of Peleus and Thetis

Peleus’s life was marked with tragedy. Zeus intervened in his life by arranging his marriage to Thetis, a sea goddess.

Zeus was attracted to Thetis himself, but prophecy stated that if she bore a son with another God, their son would be the most powerful and usurp Zeus. Therefore, he married her off to a mortal. Zeus did not want anything to go wrong at Peleus and Thetis’s wedding so he did not invite Eris, the personification of dissonance and strife. However, she showed up anyway, with an apple inscribed, ‘Fairest one of all.’ It is this apple that starts cycle of events that leads to the Trojan War.
